Mothers Are Amazing Women

Mothers give so much of themselves each day. Proverbs 31 speaks of the characteristics of a virtuous woman. This is someone I strive to imitate. I feel for the women of today with all of their struggles and pressures.

Because of this, two of my friends and I hosted a Women’s Retreat last weekend. We invited women from our church and the surrounding communities to attend this event at our church. It was an honor serving and visiting with all the women who attended!

The description in Proverbs 31: 10-31 reminded me of my mother when I first read it years ago. Mom raised four children by herself in a time when divorce was rare. She accomplished this without financial support from my father. Mom took in laundry and ironing orders till she started working at a research company in town. I was 10 years old by then.

My grandmother, another picture of a virtuous woman, helped Mom out by cooking suppers and watching us during the summers. It was obvious from whom our mother received the work ethic she possessed. Gram put us to work, too. There was no such thing as sleeping past 7:00 am on summer vacation. We washed laundry and hung it on the clothesline by 7:30 and 8:00. There was time for fun, too, but work always came first at our house.

Mom brought us up as goal-oriented, well-adjusted citizens. All four of us grew into successful adults. Mother turned 90 years old this past September 14. To honor her, we hosted a birthday party for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and some of her friends. We provided a catered meal and cake for all those who attended. She was totally surprised and greatly pleased. Mom went without many things to provide for the four of us.  She truly deserved this honor and celebration.  Mom enjoyed visiting with everyone throughout the day. One niece created a DVD of Mom’s past 90 years using pictures she solicited from us. What an incredible blessing for all of us to watch! It was truly a wonderful way to celebrate and honor a truly remarkable mother!

What have you done for your mother lately? Or, if you are a mother, what is one thing you would enjoy that would make you feel appreciated? Please let me know of other ways to honor women. Leave a reply at the bottom of this page. Thank you for stopping by my website. Have a terrific autumn day!

Stability… Priceless!

Changes are inevitable in life. Some are welcome, but some are not. For example, the changing of the seasons for this Iowan is comforting. Though winter is not my favorite season, I enjoy the beauty of fresh fallen snow and the glistening icy branches. The new buds peeking through the thawed ground in the spring time promise me warmer days ahead, and eventually hot summer days arrive clothed in green grass and bushy shrubs, and yards decorated with flowers of all sizes and colors. My favorite change features trees bursting with colored leaves of gold, red, and orange. Autumn fills me with anticipation of the harvest season, family birthdays, chilly nights, and coming holidays. Then, the cycle repeats all over again.

The expected changes mentioned above assure me that the God of Design brings stability through variety. The star constellations and moon phases follow a pattern of change due to the planet’s location to the sun, but the star patterns and moon are still recognizable. However, changes in the moral, cultural, and educational systems throw me into a tailspin. Somethings I no longer recognize as being foundational in our lives. Foundations form the framework of our very being,; everything else builds on a firm foundation, and if the foundation crumbles or shifts, so do we.

The Bible speaks to this truth. Jesus, the Chief Cornerstone, is the Christian’s foundation. If we build on any other, truth and light does not exude from our lives, and our eternal destiny with Christ slips away at death. Unlike the man who builds his house on the sand and it crumbles, we must build our home on a sure foundation. Jesus, the Anchor of our souls holds us fast through His Word, and keeps us focused on proven principles and standards for living.

Some change is inevitable, but not all change is desirable, or even better. The Light of Truth and Righteousness produces protection and direction down our paths of life in a world full of darkness and evil. Stability through faith in Christ, and His ways, Word, and principles, lead us through each storm of change with Him as our solid anchor. He holds us steady, and I thank Him for it. Stability through Christ is Priceless!

What about you? On who, or what, is your foundation built? Thanks for stopping by and sharing your perspective on change.

A Tribute to My Friend, Lori

In the last year, five of my dear friends departed this earth. These people contributed greatly to my growth as a Christian since moving to western Iowa six years ago. Each of these honored the Lord with their lives and their words. All examples of Godly Christian living, their walks with Christ encouraged me to imitate their faith. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17).

However, this last loss affected me more than the other four. Lori, a close friend, showed true friendship and challenged me to use the gifts God gave me. She created opportunities for me to use them in my new church surroundings. She asked me to lead a women’s Bible Study, give my testimony at a women’s fellowship program, sing at another women’s fellowship outreach, and promote my new ministry of authorship of middle grade books. I watched her step out in faith and organize these evangelical outreach events with another friend, pray in front of others, and trust calmly in the Lord’s leading physically, financially, emotionally, and spiritually. Together we grew in our walk with the Lord and each other.

Lori suffered for over two years with liver cancer. She faced the same prognosis as her cousin. Though her cousin knew Christ as Savior, Lori worried about her uncle and how his attitude when his daughter died. We prayed for the opportunity for Lori to witness to her cousin’s father. Lori called me the next day and expressed her joy about the chance the Lord provided with her uncle, and his willing response to her words.

Lori genuinely believed in me. She sensed my desire to serve the Lord however he needed me to serve Him. We talked and prayed together weekly. Together we sought the Lord’s will every time we prayed, and so did I as I prayed daily for my friend about her health, family, finances, and service for Christ. “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity” (Proverbs 17:17). Any problems and trials that confronted either of us, the other was there to love and support her through it.

During her last week on earth, Lori sensed Christ’s presence and welcomed her journey to Heaven. I know she reunited with her cousin and the four other church members we lost this past year. Her body and spirit separated when the Lord took her home. There is no more pain or worries of this world for Lori. Though my faith assures me Lori walked into heaven a week ago, my heart aches.

Selfishly I miss her phone conversations, prayer time together, her belief in me as a willing servant, the sweet fellowship we shared through devotions, prayer, talking, or just being together. Rarely does a person find someone who sees your heart as clearly as Lori did mine. I miss her, Lord. Thank you, Father, for her gift of friendship!

I miss Lori, and I look forward to uniting with her someday when He calls me home. In the meantime, I plan to continue serving the Lord using the gifts He gave me, and that Lori encouraged me to use. In that way I honor her as my friend, and the Lord Who brought Lori into my life on earth and throughout eternity.

What about you? Have you lost someone recently? This is my way of expressing my grief and hope because of a future reunion with my friend someday. How do you cope with loss? Please leave a reply below, and thanks for reading my blog.

Women of the Old Testament

What a joy it is to teach the Word of God! Someone asked me to teach a new study in the Bible. After praying about it, I decided to lead a study on Women of the Old Testament. We spent April and May meeting once a week and the information we gleaned from the lessons were incredible! For example, we learned that through studying Eve, choices have far-reaching consequences. The women in this group thought about what that meant for them. What choices do we make that can have long reaching consequences for others, good or bad?

We were familiar with some women we studied like Sarah, Hagar, and Esther, but several women like Abigail and the Shunammite woman we did not know. Looking deeper into each of these people’s lives helped us to identify with them. It was insightful to realize how God used Ruth and Rahab, a widow and a prostitute, in the lineage of Christ, the Messiah. The Lord can use any one which was a real encouragement to us! We discovered some of their weaknesses are ours, too. We also realized the strengths they each displayed are character traits we need today. For example, the Shunammite woman showed hospitality toward the prophet Elisha and his servant Gehazi by providing them food as they frequently travelled past her home on the way to another city. Later she had a room added on for them to provide shelter and rest as these two men served people through their travels. Remember they walked everywhere back then.

This led to application ideas. How could we show hospitality to others today? How can we be used to meet someone’s needs? As a result, I asked all those in my Bible Study and adult Sunday School class over for a Memorial Day cookout. Some of us don’t have family close to us, and holidays can be lonely celebrating alone. What a wonderful blessing my husband and I received through that gathering!

Another idea involved one member in our study group who has cancer and received a fatal prognosis last month. There is no other chemo available to try. She has five to six months to live. Members in our group thought of ways to show hospitality to her and her husband as well as ways to meet their needs. Hospice can do some things, but we plan to do a deep spring cleaning, provide some meals, especially as her condition worsens, and meet with her twice weekly to share Bible readings with her.

The study group learned though God has different roles for husbands and women, these roles are partnerships. The godly woman in Proverbs 31: 10-31 showed that women of excellence were wise business women who provided well for her husband and children that brought them all respect and well-being. She was not a couch potato and had no time to gossip about others since her focus was proactive as she prepared for each season and what that meant for her family and her business endeavors. The group members confessed that we learned some personal lessons from the “Woman of Excellence” and prioritizing our time and efforts.

What about you? What lessons have you learned lately? I would love to hear from you, and thank you for stopping by my website to share time and thoughts with me.
